Second in the completed Spinoza trilogy of vampire mystery thrillers!

Two years ago, a woman is murdered in cold blood. Now a son she'd given up for adoption returns to claim his inheritance. To verify his claim, a DNA test is ordered. Except there's one problem.

Her grave is empty.

Spinoza is a private investigator who specializes in finding the missing. He's good at what he does. Damn good. But he's also a recovering alcoholic and a royal mess. Hired to find the missing body, Spinoza will follow a set of clues that leads him to the unthinkable, a world of nightmares and dreamscapes. A world inhabited by the living and the dead.

The Vampire Who Played Dead The Spinoza Trilogy Book 2 edition by JR Rain Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I have read several of J R Rain's books. I usually enjoy them as long as there are no cliffhangers.

Spinoza is back with a new client who needs to find the body of his late alleged biological mother for a DNA test. Problem is the body is not in her grave. While searching for clues Spinoza discovers the late unlamented woman might not be as late as some would wish her to be. It then continues to a predictable end.

The story is written in first person, kind of like film noire P.I. story. For those of you who like fully developed concepts and grammar strictly adhered to will find parts of this difficult. However, if you hear a voice in your head as you read then the punctuation makes sense, it gives a rhythm to the story telling.

example. There was now some shallow breathing. Very faint. Then it came faster. Now we were getting somewhere.

If you read the above like it is written with the full stops in your head, it makes for a very good rhythm. However, if you need the sentence structure to be perfect, then this style will drive you crazy. Also there are a couple of times when tenses changed. I usually don't notice these things, but for some reason in this short story, I was thrown out of the story by a couple of the occurrences.

Spinoza is still a recovering alcoholic, trying to deal with the fact that he was responsible for his 9 year old son's death. He is looking for redemption and not believing he is deserving of it. He is not a happy person.

I also keep wondering, how did they get the DNA?

Now given all of these minor issues, predictable, editing and a depressed Hero, you might think that I didn't like the story. You'd be wrong.

I enjoyed the story despite it's flaws.

I recommend this story unless you have grammar OCD.

The Vampire Who Played Dead The Spinoza Trilogy Book 2 edition by JR Rain Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

A great way to spend a sunny afternoon. Spinoza is at it again discovering the underworld of Los Angeles. Some good deducing and some luck get him to the bottom of an unusual detective job for a young boy needing some substance in his life. Mr. Rain has once again caused me to await for his next episode in earnest. The wit and writing style make this a great value.
Spinoza is a character I would like to see developed more fully. Like Samantha Moon, I would like to see Spinoza learn more about himself and learn to deal with the man inside. I see Spinoza as much more than what Mr. Rain has shown us so far. I hope we see him again beyond this trilogy. He mixes compassion for families with his job of finding lost children. I would like to have more of this character, and more fully developed in future books.
Once again I have found a good book in this story. I found it hard to put it down until the end.
J R Rain is one of my top fave authors and The Vampire Who Played Dead does not disappoint. This is a quick read for any time of the day or night. Can't wait for the next book in this series
I'm not a fan of vampire books, but I adore J. R. Rain (I was never an Elvis fan until I read "Elvis Has Not Left The Building"), so I wasn't surprised when this book managed to capture and held my interest from start to finish. Perhaps because I was so captivated by Rain's other books I expected too much, but I think a couple of fleshing out chapters might have helped. Definitely an excellent "surprise ending" however! I know that we are told to "always leave them wanting more" but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't add more chapters to EVERYTHING, J. R.!!!!! And, I'm ready for my next Knighthorse, please.
This is a fast-paced mystery in J.R. Rain's Spinoza series. Spinoza needs to locate a dead body so that the DNA can be matched to her teen heir in order for him to inherit a fortune. Unfortunately, the body is missing from the coffin! Spinoza's investigation leads him to the creepiest places, one of which is inside the very empty coffin as he seeks clues to the body's disappearance. The flowing, clipped dialogue, the snazzy scene-and-sequel pacing of chapter openings and endings, the inevitable donut quest (necessary to solve most crimes, didn't you know?), and the Spinoza character unfolds even more as the mystery heats up, or should I say, chills down, with the search for the elusive body of Evelyn Drake. Spinoza uncovers some scary revelations during his investigation, assisted by a cameo from another detective of a connected mystery series. One of my favorite things in this short novel is the snappy dialogue, in the vein of old-school hard-boiled detective stories. And the ending is stellar, as always. A fast, fun read for a rainy night that will make you hungry for the next in the series. -- Eve Paludan, editor of Vampires, Zombies and Ghosts, Oh My!
I feel cheated on this novel. Short storyline with little imagination in the storytelling. An yet I like Spinoza character but wish for more in the storyline and plot set up. Spinoza needs more changes in his investigation. I don't wish to let down author Rain. But. She must step up her storytelling and give her reader's something with remembrance.
