This string of vignettes brings life to Liv, who thinks she is flawed from birth. Although she has endured a life of hard knocks, and despite the odds she faced, she has a strong will to continue to live. Guided by her own creative curiosity, she finds a cathartic release through writing and yoga. Along the way, on her trip, she meets a Hindu deity, her Twin flame whom she hasn't seen in eons, and some thugs.
On her non-attachment journey, after each tragedy she endures, Liv goes against the grain, and loses friends and family, not only physically and spiritually. She feels she has already lived many lives during her 35 year old time frame. The author adds her own knowledge of psychology, street smarts, and spirituality to weave together and enticing, comical, intense collection of short stories. The author shows no matter how flawed one is, applying self-realization and self-reflection to one's life will help liberate them.
Additionally, she raises questions regarding reincarnation, changing DNA structure through yoga, the authenticity of human relationships, all while using colloquial language. She also touches on the Narcissistic family dynamic and prompts the question, who is the real victim in any relationship dynamic?"

PurgeAtory Brieanne K Tanner 9781504363792 Books Reviews

A modern day version of Siddhartha with a female as the heroin. Anyone can change their life if they have the keys to success. This book outlines that path using alternative methods. This book demonstrates hard ships and how anyone can heal themselves and transform their life. I highly recommend.
An interesting journey of a young girl that is both heartwrenching and inspiring. I especially enjoyed the haikus and short poetry. The illustrations are lovely and go really well with the theme of the book. The metamorphosis of a soul going through abuse, physical and mental, finding solace in drugs and then finally finding oneself through meditation. A journey worth reading about. A well written account, straight from the heart. Loved it!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a solid 3 1/2 stars for me. The underlying message of hope and healing that Tanner stokes in the reader is what carries this read, and the use of poetry and prose together reinforce the subtle messages of yoga and life force that are interwoven themes. I am personally passionate about this message of hope and continuance and believe you can feel Tanner's passion for this come shinning through the pages. Tanner, did however, lead the reader down a few lost trails and gave a certain sense of incompletion in some areas. Also, some of the storyline seemed a bit overly repetitive. Overall, I believe the message is what shines through here and was well worth the read.
Brieanne Tanner, has had an interesting life. In her first book, PurgeAtory You Can Purge Your Karma, she tells the story of Liv, a fictional woman whose life experiences are based on Brieanne's own. Liv's memoir-like tale starts with a near-tragedy, the suicide attempt of her sullen and rather antisocial golden-child Kurt Cobain-lookalike brother, Reid. Liv, an INFJ--introverted, dark, artistic, and introspective--is the scapegoat in her narcissistic family, ignored by her father and constantly berated by her mother who can't or won't appreciate her daughter's unique qualities.

A turning point arrives at a party at which Liv is given a date-rape drug and the unthinkable happens. Liv grows into adolescence hardened and cynical but still open to new experiences. She's Gen-X personified--embracing her generation's '90s incarnation of who-cares grungy, gothic edginess. She worships the Cure, the Grateful Dead, and Nirvana, wears loose black clothing, and writes dark angsty poetry.

Later, she loses herself (and sometimes finds herself) in music and for awhile, psychedelic drugs--and meets a lot of odd, scary, and unforgettable people along the way. She suffers great losses and seems to have lived the life of an 80 year old even though she is only in her early 30s.

Through a new mentor, Liv finally discovers yoga and begins to write, and finds both of these activities to be cathartic and healing. She begins to contemplate her own karma and the meaning of everything that has previously happened.

I won't say more about Liv's story so as not to spoil anything--you just have to read it for yourself. It's one woman's spiritual and emotional journey from an abusive childhood to wellness and wholeness. It's about fulfilling one's destiny and moving on from the limitations of the past without forgetting their lessons. It's a story about narcissistic abuse that is so much more than that.

PurgeAtory is not long--just 83 pages and even includes a glossary. It's a mix of short essays, vignettes, poetry, drawings, and profound and sometimes funny ruminations about loving and living life to the fullest.

I recommend this book to all survivors of narcissistic abuse, and all survivors of just having lived life, which is itself a potentially traumatic experience. You don't have to be into yoga or Eastern religion or a member of Generation X to appreciate and learn from Brieanne's message of hope and healing.
"Lost in the abyss of time, souls learn to find each other again; love never ends"
This line stayed with me after reading the book. I love its authenticity and the rich poetic snippets it contains. Very insightful and inspirational.
A beautifully written account of a fragile soul that most of us can relate to on some level. The words, the art, the poetry. It's very inspiring. Looking forward to more books from Brieanne.
PurgeAtory is a well written account of a young women's struggle of living with mental health challenges. The details of an abusive drug filled life evolve into a life of hope. Poetry adds a special artistic flavor. This book helps develop compassion for people lost in the darkness of a tragic life. It also gives the reader valuable insight about the possibility of recovery and the healing powers of yoga.
I rate this a 4 star only because it left me hungry for more! I loved reading about Liv and the traumatic life she endured...the book then catapults you into her "new" life after she overcame all the emotional ties to her past. I definitely recommend this book.
